Master Planning

Every site, natural or manmade, consists of a unique connected network of living things and activities. Such a network imposes limitations, yet offers untapped opportunities.

Master Planning is the organization of this complicated physical environment, capitalizing on both the positive and negative attributes of a site, to accommodate ever-changing human behavior. It deals with the locations and qualities of land forms, eco-systems, activities and structures - creating a pattern of those elements in space and time - while subject to continuous change and management.

At FMK Architects, we have also found that the most successful master planning efforts usually involve a deliberate and time-tested "process", one that follows a path of analysis, programming and then design. Participating in this process inherently connects the land, the client and the designers together in a collaborative and intimate design effort. The Master Plan is the culminating product of this process - giving form, content, and meaning to the given physical environment.
