The adaptive re-use of existing structures has become a growing trend for many reasons - vacant urban land is scarce, financing for new and larger redevelopments remains increasingly difficult, and the general public’s growing interest in responsible and sustainable development is proving that there is value in recycling buildings too. As an added bonus, the adaptive re-use of older buildings allows certain structures to retain their historic integrity, and cultural value, while meeting the needs of modern occupants. From historic buildings to dilapidated structures, FMK Architects has participated in the adaptive re-use of several noted structures – none more challenging than the McColl Center for Visual Art. After decades of dormancy, and a tragic fire, this shell of a building was transformed into a thriving fine arts facility located in Charlotte, North Carolinas Central Business District. Few could envision the results that were achieved by FMK Architects and their design team |
